Juggling Academics and Social Life

Sometimes life feels like Rihanna’s new song. A lot of work, work, work and, the rest of it, you don’t really remember. Perhaps you’re having trouble managing your time and staying organized? The best way to stop the work, work, work from taking over your life? Try using an agenda to plan out your time.
As the school year is setting in, so is homework, club sign-ups, and weekend invites with friends. Although it’d be fun to spend the entire week catching up on your favourite Netflix shows, staying on top of assignments is just as important as having downtime. By keeping an agenda you can plan out your week to make sure you get the homework done and also have time for fun. If you prefer using an online agenda there are numerous apps and tools available including myHomework, Google Calendar and Tempo. These apps have customizable formats that will help you stay organized in a way that makes sense for you.
Getting involved in your school community is an easy way to achieve a healthy balance between academic and social life. Extracurriculars provide an opportunity to meet new people who share similar interests, progress in a skill, and take a break from school and stressful assignments. If you decide to use an agenda, it is important to commit to applying it for academic AND social reminders. An agenda will allow you to visualize all of your demands in a neat timetable. Being able to visualize your week will enable you to prioritize and be comfortable with your choices.
A friend of mine who is a competitive swimmer said, “One way I like to manage my time between homework and swim [practice], is by doing my homework as soon as possible. Also, if I know I’ll be missing some classes for swim meets then I email my teachers in advance to find out what I will be missing.”
Managing all of that work work work with social life can be a piece of cake. If you’re having trouble balancing academics, extracurriculars and your social life, an agenda or online planner can help you visualize and prioritize all of your commitments.

Changing Vs. Improving and Self-Awareness

Throughout middle school, you will continually face times of "who am I" and "is this who I want to be." A lot of girls consider changing their personality and style and looks to 'fit in' or 'be cool.'  The problems in the aforementioned statement is, 'changing' and 'to be cool.'  Firstly, never 'change' because you want to be cool.  You should only 'change' yourself for you -  not anyone else. Secondly, NEVER CHANGE yourself. You were born with a spectacularly unique personality that has both flaws and excellence.  Instead, IMPROVE it. Improving yourself allows you to mature and grow as a person. Changing is both fake and impossible. In other terms, don't try to change yourself - try to improve.
If you are currently going through a stage of feeling of not liking who you are, contemplate why you are feeling that way.  Firstly, try to identify who you think you are right now. I recommend thinking of four characteristics (good and bad) that you feel describes you.  Then, think of four characteristics that your close friends would use to describe your personality. It is important to do this because our peers's perspectives on us are purely defined on our actions and reactions in situations which is unlike our opinions on ourselves. Lastly, think about who you want to be in the future. It is important, at this step, to not compare yourself to your peers or celebrities.  Instead, think about characteristics you would like to have or grow - if you have a short temper, you may want to become a calmer person.
Once you have found characteristics that you would like to have in the future, put the thoughts to action! Come up with a plan to become that future you. If you want to become friendly, try to hold the door open and say 'hi' to everyone you meet. Improving isn't impossible.
